5 Tips for Using a Pressure Washer

Pressure washers can be an excellent option for anyone wanting to clean their home, sidewalk, deck, and more. Used improperly, though, they can cause damage all too easily. However, with the proper tools, prep work, and technique, pressure washers electric instead of gas-powered can help you quickly make your home sparkling clean.

Do the Prep Work

Before you even take out your pressure washer electric instead of gas-powered, you will need to do a little prep work. Thanks to your electric pressure washer, you won’t need to make a trip to the gas station, but you will need to make sure you have a power outlet within reach of the area you plan to wash. You will also want to test the flow from your hose. If it takes more than two minutes to fill a five-gallon bucket, there may not be enough flow to allow the pressure washer to work properly. Then, make sure the pressure washer inlet filter is clean and that all connections are secure. Test the pressure washer on a small area to ensure it won’t cause any damage to your surface before starting on the entire area.

Wear Protective Gear

Pressure washing is no joke. Even lower PSI models can break skin, so you will want to be adequately prepared for anything. Never aim the wand at another person or animal. Wear safety goggles, closed-toed shoes, and gloves. You’ll want to grip the wand tightly because it will offer a bit of recoil once the pressure kicks in. Your best bet is to start on the lowest pressure setting and work your way up.

Know Your Nozzle Tips

Using the wrong nozzle tip could result in stripping the paint off your car, gouging the wood on your deck, or creating a hole in the mortar between bricks in your house. Quick-change nozzle tips come in universal colors to help you avoid this. Red nozzles have a zero-degree angle for a single, high-powered stream that can easily damage surfaces. Yellow nozzles have a 15-degree angle, perfect for washing concrete. Green nozzles have a 25-degree spray, which is good for all-purpose household cleaning, from cleaning your car to the mildew on your deck or patio furniture. White is a 40-degree spray, useful for cleaning windows and siding. Black is a 65-degree spray angle, which typically isn’t good for removing dirt but is good for getting a surface wet. Finally, a soap tip is also common and has a wider opening to accommodate for the soap.

Start Far Away

Always start farther away than you think you might need to. This will help prevent you from accidentally damaging a surface. You should always be at least a foot away from the surface. Start 10 feet away and move closer until you can see the spray starting to remove dirt.

Use Soap

Pre-treating a surface with soap can help make it easier to wash away grime with the pressure washer. Soak the surface with water, add a little soap, and let it sit for a few minutes. When using soap, start with the bottom of the surface and work up with sweeping horizontal strokes to prevent streaks from runoff. Then, rinse by reversing course and working down.
