The Top 5 Factors When Buying a Pressure Washer
If you need to clean your home’s siding, your car, patio furniture, or
the patio itself, you are going to need a pressure washer to do the job
quickly and easily. However, not all pressure washers are made equal,
and the difference between pressure washers electric and gas-powered is considerable. Here is what you should look for in a pressure washer.

Pressure Washer Electric |
The Right Pressure
Generally, light-duty pressure washers, which is what most people will need, need pressure between 1,300 and 2,400 pounds per square inch (PSI). The upper range is about 3,000 PSI, but this is only necessary for professional applications. A pressure washer electric or battery-powered will likely be between 1,200 and 1,800 PSI, ideal for most home uses. Gas-powered pressure washers can provide more power but need more water to compensate. Your garden hose may not have the necessary water flow to accommodate higher-power washers.
A Soap Reservoir
Make sure the pressure washer comes with a soap reservoir. There is likely a special soap available for most jobs you will be doing, from a degreaser for your driveway to special soap to help protect your car. Without the reservoir, you will only be using plain water. While this can scour off built-up dirt and grime, it will not help with actual deep cleaning.
Battery or Corded Hybrid
If you are going to be using the pressure washer on the docks for a boat, in a camper, or your work area, it may be difficult to get an AC connection. If you are going to go the electric route, find a hybrid pressure washer that can use a direct AC plug or batteries to power it. Then, all you have to worry about is getting a hose for water. Be sure to keep the batteries charged if you are unable to find an AC outlet.
An Extended Hose
Jumping off the last point, the pressure washer should have a long hose connected to the main hose. A good length is about 15 feet, which, combined with a long hose connected at the spigot, should be able to get wherever you need. The longer the hose, the more versatile the pressure washer can be.
Different Nozzles for Various Tasks
There are, in general, two types of nozzles you will find on pressure washers. Many under 2,400 PSI only come with a single, adjustable nozzle. These typically adjust from 0 degrees, or a jet stream, to a fan of 60 degrees. Some lower-pressure and most higher-pressure washers come with different nozzles, such as a 25-degree, a 40-degree, a “turbo” or “rotating” nozzle, and a detergent nozzle. If possible, go for the versatility of multiple nozzles. The lower the degree, the more pressure, and it’s best to start at the highest and move down if you want to avoid damage to whatever you are cleaning.
