How to Get Your Yard Back in Shape After Winter

While the weather may still be chilly, the time to get your battery lawn mower out of the garage and ready to go is right around the corner. Before you start mowing, however, there are steps you should take to make sure your lawn is prepared, too. From selecting a pre-emergent weed killer to thatching and fertilizing your grass, these steps will help give you the best-looking yard on the street.

Remove Excess Thatch

When the weather is right, your first step will be to inspect the thatch layer on the lawn. Thatch is a layer of dead grass and plant matter on top of the grass that can be found in many areas, particularly those that receive a lot of snow. If the thatch is deeper than half an inch, get an electric dethatcher, or at least a thatching rake, and remove the excess. This action will allow grass seed to reach the ground while fertilizer, oxygen, and water penetrate the roots.

Ease Into the Season with Your Battery Mower

When the grass is about an inch longer than the normal height setting on your battery mower, you’ll know it’s time to start mowing. Pro tip: Make sure the grass is actively growing before you begin mowing again. Don’t mow on the lowest setting at the start of spring, which can harm the grass. You want to take just the tips off the blades of grass. As the season changes and temperatures continue to rise, the grass will start growing more quickly, and you can lower the mower height.

Be Ready to Feed Your Lawn

Spring is the most important time of the year to fertilize if you want your lawn to be in top shape—and you should be ready for it. Applying fertilizer before winter can help carry your lawn through the cold months, but as the weather warms, it’s time to reapply. You have two options: If you want to green up your lawn fast, use a quick-release fertilizer, but be warned that too much in one spot will kill the grass; alternatively, a slow-release fertilizer will feed the grass over time. Whichever option you choose, don’t fertilize until you have mowed the lawn at least twice.

Water in the Morning

Fertilizer works best when the grass is already damp, but you might want to water again after fertilizing to let it soak in. The same goes for seeding. You will want to water lightly two or three times a day, starting in the morning and allowing the sun to dry the ground. Watering in the evening can promote disease and fungi. Once the new grass is established, deep watering once or twice a week should be sufficient for the spring months.

Use a Pre-Emergent Weed Killer

A pre-emergent weed killer will help prevent weeds from growing, meaning less work for you as the spring goes on. You can use a weed-and-feed fertilizer at the start of the season but be careful if you are using other fertilizers as this could over-fertilize and burn the lawn.
