6 Things to Do in the Yard as Winter Ends
Winter is ending, so it’s time to start bringing your yard back into shape. Whether it’s setting your cordless lawn mower to mulch, pruning back old growth to make way for new, or ensuring your lawn gets the start it needs, you can do a variety of things to make your property the best on the street once again. Here are six ways you can make your lawn the envy of your neighbors.
Clean
Up De-Icing Products
One of the first things to do when winter ends is to clean up any lingering
de-icing products. This should be done as snow melts, as the de-icing products
could leach into your lawn or garden, killing grass and plants. Rock salt is
not good for vegetation, and other de-icing products may not be flora-safe. If
a de-icing product gets on your lawn or in areas with trees or bushes, apply
gypsum to the area to counteract the de-icer’s effects.
Prune
Trees, Bushes, and Shrubs
If you’ve been meaning to trim the branches from your tree, then it’s time to
grab your cordless chainsaw. Check to see if anything is growing too close to
your home or if there are any dead branches that need removal. Next, grab your
cordless hedge trimmer and tackle the bushes and shrubs around your yard. Trim
and prune them and make them look pristine. This will also help promote healthy
growth as you remove any flora damaged by winter storms.
Remove
Any Dead Plants
This step is fairly simple. Pull any dead plants from your gardens and beds and
remove any leaves you missed in the fall. This is especially important for your
lawn as dead plant material can hamper growth. Leaves that have been matted
down under snow can also result in snow mold, which is not good for your lawn
and garden. Rake the leaves away to help promote growth and let plants and
grass recover. You’ll also want to rake your lawn gently for any dead grass.
Mulch
the Lawn with a Cordless Lawn Mower
Before you mow the lawn, let it grow a bit. If you don’t want to worry about
gasoline or cord length, consider choosing cordless
lawn mowers. You’ll want to set the mower to a mulch setting, which will help
feed the growing grass. Wait until the grass is about 3-inches tall before
mowing and mulching.
Fertilize
Your Lawn
Be sure to fertilize your lawn to help the new growth. If possible, aerate and
reseed the lawn first and then fertilize. This will give the grass nutrients it
needs to help grow. Fertilizer is best in the fall but can work in the spring
as well. Consider fertilizing your garden, as well.
Prevent
Weeds
Spread weed preventer after the snow melts to get ahead of weed growth. If you
don’t use it early enough, you might be fighting weeds all spring. Avoid
putting weeds in any compost piles, as this could allow them to continue
spreading.
